Case Study

An overview on how I approach a design project. A case study example demostrating design protocols.

Project Introduction

Stryker is a highly esteemed leader in the field of orthopedic surgery and prosthetics. Recognizing the critical role of post-surgery care, Stryker wantedto develop an innovative application designed to empower medical professionals, surgeons, and post-surgery care facilities in the continuous monitoring of patients' health. This digital product is tailored for the business-to-business (B2B) market and will be strategically marketed to medical practitioners and post-surgery care facilities.

My Design Process

The UX design process begins with a comprehensive understanding of the target audience, their behaviors, and their pain points. Thorough research and user analysis serve as the foundation for crafting user personas and empathy maps, enabling designers to empathize with and design for the end-users.

Following this initial phase, the UX design process encompasses the creation of user journey maps, wireframes, and prototypes, which serve as a blueprint for the final product. Iteration and testing are integral components, ensuring that design choices are validated and refined based on real user feedback. My design protocol is divided into 4 major steps with multiple sub steps:

UX Research

When conducting User Experience (UX) research for a project, it is essential to base our approach on established behavioral models that help us understand and predict user actions and responses effectively. One such influential model is the Fogg Behavior Model, created by Dr. B.J. Fogg, which posits that for any behavior to occur, three elements must converge: Motivation, Ability, and a Prompt.

n the context of our project, the Fogg Behavior Model serves as a powerful framework to guide our UX research efforts. By understanding user motivations, assessing their abilities, and optimizing prompts, we can design a user experience that not only meets but exceeds user expectations. This approach not only improves user satisfaction but also increases the likelihood of users engaging with the desired behaviors or actions within our project.

By examining the motivations driving user actions, the abilities they possess, and the prompts that guide them, we aim to ensure our project resonates with users and elicits the desired responses. This research is an integral part of our journey to design a user-centered and effective product or service. Since this application is marketed to Doctors/Practitioners/Surgeons, here is the B=MAP findings:

Triggers

  1. Increasing constraints on their work schedules.
  2. Knowledge gaps concerning patient compliance and quality of life.
  3. Need to comprehensively show proof of conservative care.
  4. Frustration with patient passivity, misinformation, and noncompliance.
  5. Accountable care looming at which point they will be compensated on quality and cost-effectiveness of care.

Motivational Factors

  1. To set/adjust OA journey featured based on their unique needs.
  2. Doctors/IPs community.
  3. Patient conversations are more efficient and thorough so Docs/IPs encourage patients to comply with the Program and tracking.
  4. Financial interest in improving clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction scores, and reimbursement rates, as well as reducing overall costs per patient.
  5. Implicit advocacy as Docs/IPA market themselves as a Stryker program affiliated physician or by using outcomes data.
  6. Use patient tracking and monitoring data to facilitate interactions with patients, inform post-surgery compliance expectations, streamline payer surgery approvals and reduce risk of complications.

Ability Factors

  1. Current Financial Condition: High.
  2. Low: Pay an initial installation fee and ongoing maintenance fee for a minimum number of years.
  3. Location Constraints.

OA Patient Behavior (Symptoms, Treatments and Contact Points)

Stage 1 (Minimal)

Symptoms: Very minor bone spur growth; generally not experiencing any pain/discomfort.

Treatments: Routine exercise, sometimes supplements like Glucosamine/chondroitin.

Stage 2 (Mild)

Symptoms: More bone spur but mostly cartilage remains healthy, Pain, great stiffness/ tenderness when kneeling/bending.

Treatments: Nonpharmacoloic treatments, diet, exercise, some times braces/wraps.

Stage 3 (Moderate)

Symptoms: Damaged Cartilage, very frequent pain and stiffness, join swelling

Treatments: Rnonpharmacological therapies do not work. Braces/wrapscortisone, Cortisone injections; but long term use of it can damage more, pain medicins codeine, oxicodon, propoxyphene, Viscosupplementation: intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid.

Stage 4 (Severe)

Symptoms: Great pain/discomfort, join gap reduced a lot, cartilage is almost gone, possibly immobile.

Treatments: Bone realignment surgery/Osteotomy,Total knee/joint replacement or Arthroplasty.
